Our Investment Policy

Your Personal Investment Policy   Your Financial "Blue Print"

Many of our clients are successful business owners and professionals who have meticulously planned their careers and worked diligently in pursuit of their goals. Their professional success has enabled them and their families to live comfortably for many years.

"Investing is a marathon, not a sprint"

Interestingly, some of these families, whose lifestyles are the product of planning and discipline, put off developing a fully integrated personal financial strategy. "Retirement is years away," we hear, " there's plenty of time." Some are simply confident that "the money will always be there." Then, as they near retirement or a major milestone in their lives, they find themselves faced with the overwhelming responsibility of managing the fruits of their own success.

If you and your advisors have designed a viable retirement plan, it has been time well spent. However, one of the most important elements of the process is often overlooked: the development of a realistic investment policy that precisely outlines your investment objectives. We work with you and your advisors to create an integrated strategy that will direct the management of your consolidated portfolio and articulate your goals. This "blue print" for the structure of your financial life will also govern the specific management of the portfolio in terms of acceptable investments and specific allocations.

The Elements of a Successful Investment Strategy

An understanding of short-term and long-term expectations and objectives

Sufficient flexibility to change with your needs and circumstances

A tool for measuring progress against these objectives

While writing your investment policy, we pay particular attention to the following considerations:

Capital Appreciation
Capital Preservation
Current Income Needs
Loss of Purchasing Power
Estate Liquidity
Time Horizon
Tolerance for Risk / Volatility

As with a sound business plan, your investment policy will likely require periodic re-evaluation and fine-tuning. The discipline of revisiting and, if necessary, redefining your policy enables you to improve your understanding of your financial situation. It also allows us to measure your progress towards your goals.

Your investment policy will usually include specific benchmarks such as: permitted investments, allocations, distributions, and service expectations. Additionally, we will consider other factors such as: major changes in financial condition, divorce, children, charitable intent and general health. Finally, we will also include discussions of other relevant financial matters as they relate to the sources and uses of funds for the entire family.

Once you have approved the policy and we have developed an implementation plan, your logic, instincts, and your common sense should be the foundation of the plan.

Ultimately, the knowledge you gain through your participation in our initial financial review will inspire your confidence in our ability to meet your objectives and increase your comfort in our professional partnership.
